Gallery owner Elliott Fouts doesn't employ subtlety when describing the color of the facade of his new space on P Street at 19th in midtown Sacramento.

The paint company describes it as terra cotta. Fouts calls it orange.

He has his reasons for the bolder descriptive: "We had a sign up saying that we were going to be moving, and people would ask, 'Where you going?' And we'd say, 'Corner of 19th and P,' and a blank look would descend on everyone's face. It's a relatively good-sized building, but it's so nondescript, so we fixed that."

Fouts grew up working in his dad's picture-framing store in Fresno. Later, he worked for Shirley Solomon Dubnick at Tower Gallery (not on Broadway, by the way) and then in 1999 went out on his own.

For seven years, he has sold vibrant still-life paintings and landscapes from tight quarters in east Sacramento. The new Elliott Fouts Gallery will open June 1 (at the latest) in almost double the space.

Fouts will have a sale before the May 20-22 move – offering as much as 50 percent off – to lighten the load.

Susan Shoger Artist Busts

Susan Shoger's ceramic busts are the latest addition to the gallery. Art history buffs will especially enjoy the three pieces as they pay homage to three great artists: Vincent Van Gogh, Modigliani, and Marc Chagall. These busts take on a physical likeness to the artists themselves and are modeled in the style specific to each of them. For instance, Van Gogh is described by several hash marks, emulating his famous post-impressionistic style through varied brushwork.

Congratulations to EFG artist Kathy O'Leary whose painting, "Evening Surf," has been juried into the Oil Painters Of America 21st Annual National Juried Exhibition in Evergreen Colorado, from June 22 - July 21!

     Handling resales is interesting.  There is  much to know about the local art past and no better way to learn some of it than to display resale pieces and hear anecdotal histories from those who were present when these were being created.

Many of you have heard me say that it is only a matter of time with Chris' work until he hits the big time.

Well maybe that time is upon us.  Chris has just made a deal with Gallerist and arts promoter George Billis to be featured in both his New York and Los Angeles galleries.  Since Billis is the promoter behind Red Dot Art Fairs it is safe to say that Chris will be getting regular exposure in Miami as well.

It is well deserved.  Congratulations to everyone who was smart enough to buy a "Stott"  while he was on the way up.  I am among that group and I love every single piece!

The good news is that you can still get an original work by Chris right here in Sacramento.  We hope you will join us in our new digs in June for our grand opening and one man show with Christopher Stott!
